PTI Travels to South Carolina and Provides Energy Assurance Training
Public Technology Institute collaborated with the South Carolina Energy Office to develop a local government energy assurance-training module. The training module, developed by PTI’s selected and seasoned professionals, was presented twice across South Carolina — on May 14, 2013 in Columbia and in Charleston on May 15.

The Local Government IT Executive: Skill Sets and Professional Development Discussion

This webinar will review the results of the PTI survey The Local Government CIO/CTO as Executive. The survey, conducted in March/April 2013, focuses on how city and county technology leaders view the competencies and skill sets that they believe make for an effective technology executive.
For example:
• 40% of local government IT executives rate personal communication skills as very challenging when it comes to being a successful technology leader.
• 35% of technology executives rate leadership skills as very challenging.
PTI Executive Director Alan Shark will present the survey results. Then, he will be joined by Houston, Texas CIO Charles Thompson and Bill Wolpin, Editor, American City and County magazine for comment and discussion on the professional challenges that local government technology officials deal with in today’s environment.

Applications of Business Analytics in Local Government

A number of groups, practitioners and communities use differing descriptions of this idea, or similar ideas, including “smart cities”, business intelligence, performance measures, performance based budgeting, business analytics, predictive data modeling, etc.

Inaugural PTI GIS Vision Award Goes to Five Officials for Their Efforts in Super Storm Sandy
May 10, 2013, Alexandria, VA – Five public-sector employees, representing five different agencies, who acted as a team and managed to successfully cross boundaries at all levels of government to better serve and protect the public during and after Super Storm Sandy have been named recipients of the inaugural PTI GIS Vision Award.
Super Storm Sandy brought out the very best of public officials trying to plan for, respond to, and recover from all aspects of the devastating storm. The use of geospatial systems across all levels of government in the New York and New Jersey area played a vital role in these response and recovery efforts.

Building Collaboration: CPO-CIO Relationship Survey
National survey results show that the relationship between local government chief procurement officers and chief information officers is strategic and effective, but more can be done to enhance and improve this vital relationship.
Approximately 53% of local government Chief Procurement Officers (CPOs) and Chief Information Officers (CIOs) believe that the relationship between the CPO and the CIO is highly strategic, while 30% believe the relationship is somewhat strategic according to the results of a national survey conducted by the National Institute of Governmental Purchasing, Inc. (NIGP), the Public Procurement Research Center (PPRC) and Public Technology Institute.

Public Technology Institute and Deltek now offer an online procurement intelligence (PI) database as a benefit for PTI local government members.
It contains more than 800,000 local and state government purchasing opportunities, including RFPs, RFQs and supporting documentation; local and state budget and spending data, along with detailed contact and status information. It is continuously updated with information from Deltek’s GovWin IQ offering.
